At least eight farmworkers were killed, and dozens injured in a bus crash that happened Tuesday on a Florida highway in Marion County. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the bus collided with a pick-up truck. Approximately 40 people were taken to local hospitals to receive treatment for their injuries. Some of the injured were in “very serious condition,” said FHP Lieutenant Pat Riordan.
Bus was transporting Migrant Workers
According to reports, a 2010 International Bus carrying approximately 53 farmworkers and a 2001 Ford Ranger pick-up truck sideswiped each other at around 6:35am. The bus left the roadway, careened through a fence, hit a tree, then overturned before coming to rest in a field. The retired school bus was taking the workers to a farm in the area to harvest watermelons. More than 30 ambulances responded to the accident scene to treat and transport the injured.

Additional Deaths Anticipated; Investigation will take time
Due to the severity of the crash, and many of the injuries, authorities said that more deaths are expected. “At this point, we are conducting a massive traffic homicide investigation,” said Lieutenant Riordan. “We have a full team, and then some, here on the scene.” With respect to how long it will take to get answers about the accident, Riordan said, “I can tell you that it’s going to be probably six months, at least, before we conclude, factually, what transpired there today.” The National Transportation Safety Board is also monitoring the situation.
