What Is Human Trafficking? Understanding the Hidden Crisis in Florida

Human trafficking is not a distant problem — it’s happening in our own communities.

Florida consistently ranks among the top three states in the U.S. for reported cases of human trafficking. From major cities to small towns, this hidden crime thrives in silence, preying on the most vulnerable — children, immigrants, runaways, and victims of poverty or abuse.

At GOLDLAW, we stand with survivors of human trafficking and are committed to holding traffickers and enabling institutions accountable through civil litigation.

 What Is Human Trafficking?

Human trafficking involves using force, fraud, or coercion to exploit someone for labor or sex. It’s not always what people imagine — chains and kidnappings are rare. More often, traffickers use psychological control, manipulation, and threats to trap their victims.

There are two primary types:

  • Sex Trafficking: Victims are forced or manipulated into commercial sex acts. This includes minors involved in sex acts regardless of coercion.
  • Labor Trafficking: Victims are forced to work under threats, debt bondage, or abusive conditions — often in agriculture, construction, restaurants, or domestic labor.

Why Florida?

Florida’s large immigrant population, tourism industry, agricultural economy, and proximity to international borders make it a prime location for trafficking operations. Major highways, ports, and hotels are common trafficking corridors.

Warning Signs of Trafficking

  • A person appears fearful, submissive, or controlled by someone else
  • Signs of physical abuse, malnourishment, or exhaustion
  • Inability to speak freely or lack of personal documents (ID, passport)
  • Working long hours with little or no pay
  • Sudden isolation or withdrawal, especially in teens

If something feels wrong — trust your instincts. Survivors often rely on everyday people to help spot signs others overlook.

How GOLDLAW Helps Survivors of Trafficking

Survivors of trafficking may have legal grounds to file civil lawsuits against not only the traffickers, but the businesses or institutions that enabled the abuse — such as hotels, landlords, online platforms, or employers who turned a blind eye.

At GOLDLAW, we:

Handle each case with trauma-informed care
Protect the survivor’s identity and safety
Hold all responsible parties accountable — not just individuals, but corporations and systems
Fight for meaningful compensation to support long-term healing

You Are Not Alone
