Supporting Cancer Patients: The Meaning Behind No Shave November
GOLDLAW employees make it a priority to support and promote worthwhile causes in their communities, and civil trial attorney Paul Shalhoub is no exception.
Paul is one of the organizers and Co-Founder of “YLS No Shave November,” an annual fundraiser for Cancer Alliance of Help & Hope, Inc., a well-known local charity conceived by Palm Beach County banker Charles Fischer, Jr., and his wife Greta Jean. Realizing the plight faced by cancer patients who sometimes had to choose between feeding and sheltering their families or paying for their cancer treatments, with the support of friends in the community, the couple created Cancer Alliance of Help & Hope in 2003. The grassroots organization now serves over 1,200 clients and family members each year, providing financial assistance to cancer patients in extraordinary need. The charity also provides comfort through programs that provide care baskets, food and fuel gift cards, wigs and caps, school supplies for kids, and even care and supplies for family pets.
What is “No Shave November?”
The concept behind “No Shave November” is simple. Participants spend the month growing out their beards or mustaches only to have the facial hair removed in a “shave off” extravaganza, to be held this year at the Palm Beach Gardens Marriott Hotel, on Thursday, November 30th. To raise funds, family, friends, and local businesses pledge financial donations to “beards” of their choice. This year, organizers have a goal of raising $100,000. As of today, – Monday, November 13 – they are already 42% of the way there!
“I’ve been participating in the ‘YLS No Shave November’ since 2015,” said Shalhoub. The always upbeat, smiling litigator has raised a significant amount of money for the cause over the years, including more than $14,000 in 2022, his “personal record” to date. The Event itself has raised over $250,000 since Shalhoub started it with the Young Lawyers Section of the Palm Beach County Bar Association. For those looking to support him again this year, he has added a special incentive.
“For every $100 that someone donates, I will provide them with a free rack of ribs from Smokin Gator BBQ, to be redeemed on Super Bowl Sunday,“ pledged Shalhoub. Smokin’ Gator BBQ is a catering business he operates in his free time along with his dad. If you want to donate, but don’t care for ribs, or won’t be around for the Super Bowl, don’t worry. Paul has you covered.
“We’ll be donating those ribs to Quantum House,” said Shalhoub. “The organization lessens the burden for families whose children are receiving medical treatment in Palm Beach County for Serious conditions by providing families with a safe and supportive place to stay. It’s a phenomenal organization, and we’re honored to provide a food donation that many will be able to enjoy.”
