Florida Car Accidents — What to Do Immediately After a Crash

A car crash can leave you shaken, confused, and overwhelmed — especially in those first few moments.
At GOLDLAW, we’ve helped countless accident victims in Florida get the compensation they deserve. The steps you take after a crash can make a huge difference in your health, your recovery, and the strength of your legal case.

Here’s what you should do — and avoid — immediately after an auto accident in Florida:

Step 1: Prioritize Safety and Call 911

  • Check for injuries — yours and others.
  • Move your vehicle to a safe location if possible.
  • Call 911 and request law enforcement and medical assistance.

Even if you feel okay, get evaluated. Adrenaline can mask serious injuries.

Step 2: Document Everything at the Scene

If it’s safe, gather the following:

  • Photos of all vehicles and damage
  • License plates and driver’s license information
  • Names and contact info for drivers, passengers, and witnesses
  • Insurance information
  • Police officer’s name and crash report number

Do not admit fault — even casually. Stick to the facts when speaking with police.

Step 3: Report the Crash (If Police Didn’t Respond)

If law enforcement didn’t arrive, Florida law requires you to report any crash involving injury, death, or more than $500 in property damage. File a report with the Florida Highway Patrol or your local police department within 10 days.

Step 4: Get Medical Treatment Right Away

Even if injuries seem minor, go to urgent care, the ER, or your primary physician as soon as possible. Florida’s Personal Injury Protection (PIP) laws require treatment within 14 days of the accident to qualify for insurance coverage.

Step 5: Call an Auto Accident Attorney Before Speaking with Insurers

Insurance companies are trained to minimize payouts — even your own. Before giving a statement or accepting any offer, speak with an attorney who understands Florida auto accident law.
